When I lived in Russia, the dates for the changing of the seasons captivated me. Officially, March 1 kicked off spring, not the Vernal Equinox on March 20 or 21. It appears that the Met Office, the UK's national weather service, changed the official start date of spring to March 1 a number of years back. From what I can tell this caused a stir that still has some people riled. The start of seasons on the first of the month is called a meteorological season, as opposed to the astronomical seasons that begin near the start of the last third of December, March, June, or September.
Regardless of whether today marks the official start of spring or not, I thought this photo of the receding ice on a pond seemed appropriate to highlight the approaching end of winter and the start of warmer weather.
