Old Schoolhouse

This old schoolhouse resides next to the Victor Township Hall in Clinton County.  This is the third location for this building.  The schoolhouse was originally located on what used to be Centerline Road, but now is a part of the trail system of Sleepy Hollow State Park.  It was moved once inside the park property and then eventually relocated to its current spot during the construction of the park's campground.

Eastern-Tailed Blue Butterfly

The Eastern-Tailed Blue butterfly (Cupido comyntas) gets its name from the tiny tail-like tufts on its lower wings near the big orange spots.  While its ventral wings are grey, its dorsal wings are blue when open. These extremely small butterflies only have a wingspan of three-quarters of an inch, so they often go unnoticed unless you intend to look for them.  When they close their wings, as pictured above, they are about the size of pinkie fingernail on an adult - not very big at all.

Long Live The King

I chased this freshly emerged Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) all over a field full of golden rod the other day.  He would not open his wings long enough for a good photograph of the dorsal side.  When he did flutter his wings, they were very bright orange and had no damage that would be common in older butterflies.
