American Lady Butterfly

Despite the harsh winter we experienced this year, I remain amazed at how many of our native butterflies have already started to emerge.  I spotted this pristine American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) butterfly at Fenner Nature Center on Saturday.  It took full advantage of the bright sunshine to warm its open wings during the cool morning when I found it, so I could not get a clear photograph of the intricate design on the ventral side of its wings.  Looking back at my roughly kept records, I have never seen one of this species this early in the season.
