State Seal

This large Michigan state seal hangs in the lobby of the building in which I work.  The seal hung above the rostrum of the meeting hall where the 1963 Michigan Constitution was debated in the old Civic Center.

Fun Fall Fungus

This will probably be my favorite mushroom photograph from now on (not that I had one up to this point).  This little guy was protruding from a tree that has fallen over one of the ponds at Fenner Nature Center.  It was poking out of a knothole on the side of the tree facing upward.  It was far enough off the bank of the pond I had to use my 200mm lens to zoom in on it.   Had I been wearing my mud boots I would have waded out to it to get better pictures.

A Piece Of History

Valerie needed photographs of one of the weather-worn modillions from the Captiol restoration project, so we set up an impromptu studio in her office the other morning.  The lighting was not ideal, but I think I was able to get good enough photographs.

First Presbyterian Chuech - Lansing, Michigan

Last night on my walk home from work, I noticed an interesting vantage point on the Capitol Mall from whence I could photograph First Presbyterian Church on Ottawa Street.  The sun's angle and the mostly blue skies highlighted the contrasting white spire and pediment.  The modern addition to the church also has an unique metal cross affixed to the side of the building that cast a shadow in the slowly setting sun.

Early Autumn Colors

Last Sunday was a very overcast day, but it was still a nice enough day to get out after church and capture some photographs.  I ventured up to the Maple River State Game Area that is bisected by US-127 north of St. Johns.  I had hoped to see the bald eagles that frequent the area this time of year.  We had seen one there on our way home from the cabin the day before, so I thought I might see another.  Once I arrived and had been there a while I could see two eagles circling around the flooded area on the other side of US-127.  Given the southbound traffic typical for Sunday afternoons and the circuitous route I would have needed to take to get to that side of the marsh, I decided to keep wandering where I was.  I shot a number of photographs, but the large number of hungry mosquitoes kept harassing me, so I only stayed about an hour.

I popped back down to Lansing and when to Fenner Nature Center for a while.  Again, the overcast skies darkened the landscape and made me have to adjust my camera more than I would have preferred.  Nonetheless, Fenner did not fail me and I captured a number of good pictures there in spite of the poor lighting conditions.
