Old Vernor's Sign

A building was recently demolished on the south side of the 7500 block of West McNichols in Detroit.  An adjacent building sported a slightly faded, but still vibrant advertisement for Vernor's ginger ale.  Like the Faygo wall advertisement I photographed in 2013, which has since been vandalized, this piece of Detroit and Michigan history will probably not remain untouched for very long.  Click this link for the location should you wish to visit the sign before it is gone.

Better Made Chips - Detroit, Michigan

Nothing's better than Better Made potato chips, processed in Detroit at the factory on Gratiot.  Unfortunately, the surrounding neighborhood has seen much better days.

REOTown Advertisement Uncovered

I photographed this fading advertisement on the wall of an old building in Lansing's REOTown.  The building is located on South Washington Avenue directly across from what once was Kwast Bakery.  Until recently, the advertisement was hidden by the adjacent building that has been demolished.  I hold out very little hope that this will remain visible long, as it appears some work is being done on the now vacant lot.  My other fear is that some punk will decide to embellish it with graffiti.

Agricultural Advertisement

This barn with its unique silo is just south of Portland, Michigan on Grand River Avenue.  I would never disagree with a giant silo and its claim that potato chips are a healthy food!

Faygo Wall Advertisement

I have been searching for this Faygo sign for a while.  I finally located it and had the opportunity to photograph it this weekend.

Neon At Henry Ford Museum

I love neon signs and was happy to see that the Henry Ford Museum has a couple of its big neon signs back up and running.  They had been dark the last time we visited due to, as I assume, the ongoing renovations to their main exhibit.

Faded Railroad Logo

On the west side of Corunna, Michigan, in McCurdy Park, the local historical society has relocated a number of old buildings to create a historical village.  They have also moved an old train caboose to the site.  The paint job could use a touch up, especially the logo.  The caboose belonged to the Grand Trunk Western railroad.  This company still services Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois with its main termini in Port Huron and Chicago.  The old depot in REO Town, currently undergoing renovation and refitting as an office for the Board of Water & Light, once served as a Grand Trunk Western depot in Lansing.  Most likely, this caboose traveled through Lansing more than once in its lifetime.

Campaign Pins

Valerie brought home a bag of old campaign lapel "pins" the other day that one of the members of the historical society found.  I plan on matting and framing a number of them for the silent auction this fall.  Most of the pins appear to be from Democrats, which makes the Romney pin stands out in crowd.  The "Elly!" pin in the upper right corner was for Elly Peterson, also a Republican.  She ran for U.S. Senate in 1964 against Senator Phil Hart, whose heart shaped pins you can see in the collection.  I do not know if the trend started with Peterson, but as a campaign hack, I cannot stand when campaign consultants advise female candidates to use only their first name or to feature it more prominently than their last name (the frequent insertion of an exclamation point behind the name also irks me).  I do like the wordless bow tie pins that Governor Williams had.  He had enough name recognition that it did not matter that there were no words.
