Brevort Lake Spring Sunset

This little corner of Brevort Lake is a prime location for sunset photographs.  I generally photograph the sunset from the beach, but on our most recent trip to the cabin, I was able to take the picture from atop the still-frozen lake itself.

Brevort Lake Sailboat

This little sailboat has been moored in Brevort Lake all summer and I have never seen anyone sailing it.  The bright sunshine and autumn colors made for a perfect photograph of it last weekend.

Waves On The Shore

I photographed closeups of the waves cresting on the shoreline of Brevort Lake a few weeks ago.  I decided that presenting them in black and white made for more dramatic pictures and highlighted the textures of the water and sand more.

Up North With Mom

Two weekends ago, my mother, sister, niece, Valerie, and I ventured up north to the cabin.  Mom had not had the chance to see all the work we did since last summer.  We also went up to Whitefish Point, Point Iroquois, and the Soo.  I treated them by making breakfast each morning and we got our fill of onion rings at Clyde's Drive-In in the Soo.  Claire had her first startling experience with the fog horn on a passing freighter to which we were waving from along the shoreline.  She maintains that she "did not jump" when the very loud horn sounded, but she did run very quickly to Leigh and bury her face into her mom.

Eagle Family

Last weekend when Doug and I kayaked out into Lake Huron, we happened upon a family of Bald Eagles sunning themselves on the beach.  There were two adults and several immature eagles hanging out there and most of them took off when they saw us rounding the bend.  I did not have my 500mm lens or I could have gotten far better photos. Thankfully, I had my 105mm lens on the camera at the time and I got a few shots of the eagle family.  We saw Bald Eagles on three different occasions on Saturday.

Before I started my long exposures of the stars at the cabin last Friday, I shot some slightly shorter exposure photos of the campfire.  The sparks from the fire made for some interesting photos.

Starry Sky

This past weekend, my brother-in-law and I spend some time at our new cabin putting up insulation and a gate and also kayaking a bit.  I set up my camera on Friday night and took some long exposure photos of the stars.  The moon was nearly half full, but even that lit up the sky pretty well, so I did not have the darkest environment I would have liked.  The photo above is a 30 minute exposure with the middle of the photo focused on the North Star.  The axis of the earth points in the general direction of the North Star, which remains stationary in the sky while the other stars appear to swirl around it.  I am not completely happy with my first attempt at making a photo like this, as the star "trails" are slightly out of focus.  I attribute that to the dew that started to form on my lens nearly immediately upon starting this experiment.  I hope to have many more chances to try to capture similar photos in the years to come.

Camp Breakfast

No matter what you had for breakfast this morning, I am pretty sure that our breakfast yesterday made over the campfire was better.  We took a few years off of our lives, but we ate very well.
